Helping While Sleeping

Thousands of visitors to Bristol throughout the summer helped fund vital research into a disease which claims the lives of more than 10,000 men in the UK every year.

The ‘Pound on the Pillow’ scheme run by the Marriott Royal Hotel encouraged guests to add a pound to their bill in support of Run for the Future, the annual 5km fun run organised by Bristol Rotarians in aid of prostate cancer research.

The Marriott initiative raised just under £5,000, which was handed over to Run for the Future organiser, Martina Peattie, by the Hotel’s Senior Sales Manager, Lisa Hale..

The Run, which will be held for the fifth year next September, has raised nearly £170,000 in total for the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Charity.

The money is being used directly to fund joint research between the BUI at Southmead Hospital and the University of the West of England into earlier diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Martina Peattie says the Marriott guests will help make a real difference.

“They may not have realised the contribution they will have made while they were sleeping, but every pound will help us fight prostate cancer. It’s hoped the research carried out in Bristol will lead to the introduction of a national screening programme on the BHS, which would save thousands of lives.”

The organisers of Run for the Future have appealed to competitors in this year’s event to send in any outstanding sponsorship money as soon as possible.
