Sponsors on the Run

Two major organisations have renewed their support for this year’s Run for the Future in aid of prostate cancer research.

The James Tudor Foundation, a Bristol-based a grant-giving charitable organisation established for the relief of sickness, and Spire Bristol Hospital The Glen, one of the leading private hospital providers in the UK, both sponsored the event last year and have again donated £5,000 each to the 2010 event.

Spire Healthcare, which now has 36 hospitals across the UK, including the Glen, says they’re supporting Run for the future again because it’s vital to raise awareness of the disease.

Rod Shaw, Chief Executive of the James Tudor Foundation, hoped their donation will encourage other organisations to take prostate cancer seriously. The Foundation makes grants for palliative care; medical research; health education, awards and scholarship; the direct relief of sickness and the fulfilment of its charitable objects by other means.

“Run for the Future has not only got people talking about prostate cancer, but has also raised funds for vital research into the disease,” said Rod.

Over the past four years Run for the Future has raised more than £175,000 in aid of the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Appeal – that money is now directly funding two joint research projects between the BUI at Southmead Hospital and the University of the West of England into improving diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

More than 35,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and more than 10,000 die. It’s hoped the research will lead to the introduction of a national screening programme, which could reduce the number of deaths by 50%!

Martina Peattie, from Bristol Rotarians, which organises Run for the Future, says that until the NHS provides mandatory screening it’s vital men take responsibility for their health and ask their GPs for a PSA blood test – it could well save their life.

This year’s Run for the Future takes place on Sunday, 19 September. For further information or to register visit www.runforthefuture.org or call 0117 323 6328
