A Pound for Prostate Cancer

A Pound For Prostate Cancer

One of Somerset’s top hotels will be helping fund research into a disease that claims the lives of more than 10,000 men in the UK every year.

Doubletree by Hilton Bristol South Cadbury House at Congresbury will be supporting Run for the Future 2010, the event which raises money for the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Appeal.

The Hotel, and the Health Club and Spa, will be asking guests eating or staying with them throughout the year to add a discretionary £1 to their bill.

Mark Hands, Group General Manager at Double Tree by Hilton Bristol South Cadbury House, says: “If our support can save just one life, then it’s worth it.

“We encourage all our guests and members to look after their health, but prostate cancer is a disease that people are reluctant to talk about. Run for the Future not only raises vital funds for cutting edge research, but also raises awareness.”

This year’s 5km run, which is organised by Bristol Rotarians, takes place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 19 September.

The Club at Cadbury House will also be planning a number of fund raising events and entering a team of runners in this year’s event.

Prostate Cancer affects more than 35,000 men every year in the UK. Run for the Future has raised £175,000 over the past four years to fund a joint research project between the BUI at Southmead Hospital and University of the West of England. It’s hoped it will lead to the introduction of a national screening programme and save thousands of lives.

Until then men aged 50 and upwards are encouraged to ask their GP’s for an annual PSA blood test to check for prostate cancer. If detected early, the odds of it being successfully treated are greatly improved.
