Costco, the cash and carry membership warehouse chain, is to sponsor this year’s Run for the Future in Bristol to help raise funds for prostate cancer research.

The cash & carry centre will be providing more than a thousand bottles of water – one for each competitor taking part in the 5km event - and part – funding a local radio campaign to raise community awareness.

In addition, staff at the Costco depot at Avonmouth will be taking part in this year’s Run for the Future and encouraging members to join them.

The event, which takes place this year on Sunday, 19 September, is organised by Bristol Rotarians to raise funds for the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Appeal.

Over the past four years Run for the Future has raised more than £175,000 to directly fund research at the University of the West of England and at Southmead Hospital into more effective diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Every year more than 35,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 10,000 die, yet there is no national screening available from the NHS. It’s hoped the research fund by Run for the Future will lead to the introduction of a screening service, saving thousands of lives.

Run for the Future organiser Martina Peattie says the event is one for all the family.

“Last year nearly 1,000 people took part, both running and walking, and we want to add to that figure because every pound we raise goes directly towards vital local research into prostate cancer,” she said.

Costco Marketing Manager, Emma Fitzgerald, said the company was keen to support local charitable efforts which benefited the whole of the family.

“Although prostate cancer is a male disease, the whole of the family suffers – mothers, daughters, sisters and children. If our support can help save men’s lives then it’s worthwhile.”
