School Run for Cancer

Pupils and teachers at Queen Elizabeth Hospital School in Bristol are to take part in this year’s Run for the Future to help raise money for research into prostate cancer.

The 15 boys and eight staff members decided to take part in the event, which supports the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Appeal, after one of the teachers was taken ill with a male cancer.

Tristan Dunn, Head of Year 11, gave a presentation about prostate cancer in assembly and spoke about Run for the Future after getting the information from a pupil whose father is a senior member of staff at the BUI at Southmead Hospital

The boys, all aged 15 and 16, will be joined by QEH staff members Tristan Dunn, Steve Cook, Rick Martinhoe, Ed Gent, Flora Waite-Taylor, Debbie Guthrie, Hilton Kyle and Jo Sharrock.

Mr. Dunn said it was important to help raise awareness about the disease. “After hearing about how prostate cancer can have such a major effect on families, the boys in Year 11 wanted to do their bit and take part!”

Colleague Ed Gent, who last year suffered testicular cancer, said men should be more aware of their health. “If we can get men talking about prostate cancer, then we might help save lives.”

Run for the Future is organised by Bristol Rotarians and has so far raised more than £175,000, which is being used directly to fund two major prostate cancer research projects at the BUI and at the University of the West of England.

This year’s 5km fun run or walk takes place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 19 September. For more information, or to register to take part, visit www.runforthefuture.org or telephone 0117 323 6328.
