DJ Mistri says take the Prostate Cancer Challenge

Ujima FM DJ Mistri, aka Julz to his friends, is appealing to Afro-Caribbean men in the West Country to get serious about prostate cancer.
DJ Mistri, who presents a drive time show on Ujima Radio on Thursdays and Fridays and who comes from an Afro-Caribbean background, was shocked to discover that Afro Caribbean men are three times more likely to get the disease, which kills 10,000 men in the UK every year.
As a result, Julz is planning to take part in the 5km Run for the Future in Bristol this September to help raise awareness of prostate cancer that helps to fund vital research into earlier diagnosis and treatment.
The event is organised by Bristol Rotarians in aid of the Bristol Urological Institute’s Prostate Cancer Charity Appeal and over the last four year’s has raised more than £175,000, which is now funding two special research projects.
Julz said “My grandfather was a strong and proud man who suffered from problems with his prostate. Despite his pride he took this problem seriously and received life saving treatment. Having this problem so close to me means that I really would like to encourage others and so I’ll be recruiting runners for a Ujima FM team.”
Julz went onto say, “Run for the Future is doing an incredible job getting people talking about prostate cancer and I want to do my bit to help by encouraging men from an Afro-Caribbean background to get their crown jewels checked out – it could save their lives!”
Men aged 50 and over are most at risk, but there is no national screening programme available on the NHS so men have to ask their GP’s for a PSA blood test, which measures antigens in the blood.
Julz says: “It’s vital we discover an accurate testing system which the NHS can adopt. Men are dying needlessly and from ignorance because they won’t talk about it.”
Run for the Future will be at this weekend’s St Paul’s Carnival signing up runners for this year’s event, which takes place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 19 September.
