Singing for Prostate Cancer
Gloryfest 2010
Actors, singers, dancers, poets and speakers from all over Bristol will join together at the Colston Hall next month for an inspirational concert to raise awareness of prostate cancer.
Gloryfest 2010 is being organised by the PEDSevent Community Group on Saturday, 18 September, to highlight the difficulties faced by men and their families when they get the disease.
More than 35,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and more than 10,000 die. Research shows that men from an African Caribbean background are three times more likely to get it.
Shirelle Gayle and Poku Osei, project managers for Gloryfest 2010, have organised it on the eve of this year’s Run for the Future, the annual 5km charity run in aid of prostate cancer research.
They’ve worked with a number of organisations, including Prospect Bristol, the Bristol Urological Institute and Bristol Rotary, who organise Run for the Future. Any funds raised on the evening will go towards the BUI Prostate Cancer Appeal.
Poku Osei said “Many men and women I have spoken to about prostate cancer are totally unaware of where the prostate is and how many men are actually dying of it every year unnecessarily.”
Shirelle Gayle added “The increased rate of statistics and the damage caused to families by prostate cancer is the reason we are delivering this event. Early diagnosis and treatment saves lives.”
Gloryfest 2010 will present an evening of informative speakers and inspirational performances, including drama written by Edson Burton; poetry by Miles Chambers; dance by the Move of God Dance Troupe, plus a host of renowned singers and choirs.
