Hotel Challenge
Hotel Issues Prostate Cancer Challenge
The manager of one of Bristol’s leading hotels has issued a fitness challenge to other major hotels in the City is a bid raise awareness of prostate cancer.
Lorraine Jarvie, from Hotel du Vin, is challenging Bristol’s other major hotels to enter teams into next month’s Run for the Future to raise funds for the Bristol Urological Institute’s Prostate Cancer Appeal.
Lorraine, a keen runner who’s just recovering from surgery, says the 5km fun run organised by Bristol Rotarians is an opportunity for hotels in the City to unite behind a common cause.
“I’m encouraging them to enter as large a team as possible, but we’ll only count the first 10 across the line to find out which of us is the fittest hotel,” said Lorraine.
“The money raised by Run for the Future is being used to carry out vital research into new ways of diagnosing the more virulent strains of the disease and it’s something we should all support. More than 10,000 men die every year from prostate cancer, but there’s no national screening programme available on the NHS.”
The Marriott Royal Hotel and Brook Redwood Hotel & Country Club at Failand have already promised to enter teams and the Hotel du Vin hopes others will follow.
“Prostate cancer not only affects men, but families as well,” says Lorraine. “Hotels are like large family units and the fitness challenge will hopefully generate more awareness of the disease and encourage men to get checked regularly by their GPs.”
This year’s Run for the Future takes place on the Downs in Bristol on Sunday, 19 September. To register to take part, or for more information, visit www.runforthefuture.org or call 0117 323 6328.
